WO2 Greg Mildon, 2 HSB (NZ), Linton
Citation for Army Colour
Sports Code: Touch and Softball
WO2 Greg Mildon has represented the Army and NZDF in both Touch and Softball with the latter being his preferred sport in the 'early days' with him being selected in the Army and Combined Services men's teams in 1992. He continued to play softball up until 2007 when his touch commitments didn't interfere. Greg's true calling was to Touch.
Since 2000, Greg has put his stamp on Army Touch. As an outstanding player and excellent administrator he has paved the way in keeping Army Touch 'in touch' with the rest of the country and has ensured the fraternity is able to compete at a provincial and National level.
Greg has been the driving force behind everything touch has been doing for the last decade, from organising Army regional's, to arranging overseas tours and to competing in nationwide competitions.
Greg has held almost every appointment possible regardless of which unit he is posted to, from coach to manager to chairman to secretary to regional POC. Also outside of Army, Greg Mildon has represented every province at each region he has been posted to not only as a player but also in an administrative role.
In 2002, Greg receive the NZ Army Sportsperson of the Year Award and the Best and Fairest award in the Manawatu module, his selection into the Manawatu Mixed 30's who placed 3rd in the National tournament and his selection into the NZ mixed 30's squad. Since 2000, Greg has made NZ Army and NZDF 30's teams and has been selected over the years in several NZ Teams (Mixed 30's, NZ Academy Team, 35 Men's, Men's 40's). As a side note, he also had to apply for dual citizenship in 2009 after his selection into the Niue Mixed 30's. A career highlight would definitely have to be the NZ Men's 40's team taking gold off the Australians at the world champs in Scotland 2011. It was the first time in 33 years that New Zealand won gold; Greg was a contributing factor to that success.
Greg's passion and knowledge and commitment to the code not only within the Defence Force have been obvious, with him also taking on additional roles like Manawatu Open Women's Manager, Manawatu Touch Association Vice president and Celtic Touch Manawatu Committee Member.
His accolades are too numerous to mention but have been included at the end of this, all that can be said is that Greg Mildon has been absolutely tireless in his drive and passion for the code and touch itself within New Zealand. It is because of his insomnia induced organisational skills and playing prowess Army Touch has been able to have all of its successes to date and without personnel like Greg the code would not be in its current position it is. Army Touch holds the NZDF Touch Overall Trophy and has done so since 2005.
Greg Mildon's effort's as both a player and administrator have taken the next step as he has just completed the Touch NZ Level One Referees Course.
His commitment to the code knows no bounds. He has influenced all walks' of life during his time in touch, from player, organiser, conduct enforcer, friend, coach, mentor, camp mother, the list is endless. For these reasons there is no doubt that Greg is a worthy nominee for the NZ Army Colour for Sport.
