Band Master - Staff Sergeant Phillip Johnston FTCL
Staff Sergeant Phillip Johnston was born in Christchurch. He was brought up and educated in Blenheim. Phil originally joined the Royal New Zealand Navy Band in 1996 before transferring to the New Zealand Army Band in October 1997. His first major appointment in the band was Practical Instructor of the School of Music.
Phil has achieved the title of Champion Brass Band Bass (BBB) player of New Zealand twenty one times, and the coveted Brass Bands Association of New Zealand Champion of Champions soloist title four times in his playing career. He was also awarded first place at the prestigious Ern Kellar International Brass Musician of the Year. He has been a member and frequent soloist of the National Band of New Zealand on five occasions touring Europe three times, the USA and multiple domestic tours.
Phillip was Course Manager of the Mutual Assistance Programme Bandsmen Course, run by the Army Band School of Music, from 2005 to 2007. He became Deputy Bandmaster in January 2008, before being appointed Drum Major in August 2008. He led the band for many prestigious marching events including the Edinburgh Tattoo in Sydney and Edinburgh in 2010, the International Defence Exhibition in Abu Dhabi and the Rugby World Cup campaign in various stadiums around New Zealand in 2011.
SSGT Johnston was appointed to his current position as Bandmaster in January 2012.
